Using Maths Skills and Knowledge as part of Science
Second Class
Scientific Strand: Living Things
Strand Unit: Myself
Curriculum Objective: Recognise and/or measure physical similarities and differences between individuals. In Second Class, the children used their maths skills to measure the height of another person. Some children predicted who was going to be the tallest in the class before measuring. After this, the children compared the heights of everybody in the class. |
The children also measured their foot size using a metre stick. The children observed, predicted, analysed and recorded their results

Strand Unit: Plants and Animals
Curriculum Objective: Sort and group living things into sets.
Junior Infant children investigated the natural materials which they found on their nature walk. They sorted the materials into groups using maths skills. They sorted by size, colour and type of material.

Curriculum Objective: Sort objects into sets according to colour
Junior Infants learned about sorting objects according to their colour. In pairs, they sorted 2D shapes, 3D shapes, vehicles, buttons, teddy bears, etc.

Strand Unit: Plants and Animals
Curriculum Objective: Observe, discuss and identify a variety of plants and animals in different habitats in the immediate environment.
Junior Infants learned all about mini-beasts. They predicted how many mini-beasts they would see on the mini-beast hunt. They walked around the school and used a magnifying glass to located mini-beasts. They counted all the mini-beasts they found.

Strand Unit: Forces
Scientific Strand: Energy and Forces
Strand Unit: Forces
Curriculum Objective: Explore how objects may be moved.
The children designed a bar chart to record the number of children in the class who travel to school by foot, car and bicycle.

Third Class
Scientific Strand: Living Things
Strand Unit: Human Life
Curriculum Objective: Become aware of and investigate breathing.
The children in Third Class measured their heart rate at rest. They predicted what would happen to their heart rate after exercising for one minute. They measured and recorded their heart rate once again. Their breathing was a lot quicker and their heart rate had dramatically increased.

In our school, we encouraged children to walk to school when possible to save energy. Many children walked to school this year. We completed a survey to compare how many children walked to school in 2012 and in 2014. Then we recorded our data using a pie chart. We discovered we had made a huge improvement while conserving our resources.
